Please read my response to a question in Quora
Life becomes beautiful when we find a purpose to live. Often we fall into the trap of boredom and wander like a listless soul when we don’t know what do we want to do with life. And in the midst of idling often we indulge in bad habits and soon we are engulfed with depression and sadness.
To begin with, first, you need to explore your life. You need to find triggers that excite you, find activities which once you are involved you don’t see the clock, a purpose that calms your soul. You can do this by experimenting with ideas. Though ever person trigger points are different, I am giving an outline to get you started.
- Find a Hobby, the easy and most easy to find what interests you. Writing, gardening, biking – find what interests you. Sometimes you will find a hobby interesting, only to lose interest soon. That is totally fine, keep trying other things. It is okay to explore.
- Set some life goals, but don’t create an impossible list. Start with small goals, achievable targets. And As you meet them celebrate them. A Sense of achievement gives you belongingness.
- Exercise, that adrenaline rush will boost your energy level and drive positivity
- Read Inspirational stories and Autobiographies, books are often the window to ideas, thoughts, and inspirations.
- Make Friends, even if you are not social. You need that small milieu whom you can trust, vent and share your thoughts with
- Create a Plan, make a year plan, break it down to monthly plan, then to weeks and then to days. Your mind should be always looking out to what you can incrementally achieve.
If your sadness still continues to exist, see a doctor, seek help. Mental health is as important as physical health and there is no social taboo in asking for help.
I hope this is helpful. I wish you the best

Agree with your words. We need to remove the word taboo. It really is a setback.
Amazing answer.
Agree Shantanu. Creating more awareness and encouraging people to come out and speak about their issues is very important.
Depression can happen to anyone. I like your sound advice Shantanu. Never deal with sadness by yourself for long periods. Friends really can help.
Agreed. Though its very important to pull oneself out of depression, it becomes tough, like literally. During those times, when people are unable to think clearly, it’s almost impossible for them to identify the things that trigger them, or set out to find anything. They pull themselves in a corner, away from people.
I agree, engaging in positive things on a daily basis helps build the mind against Depression. Nicely written dear 🙌
Thanks for the nice motivation.
This is very insightful thanks Shantanu, not your usual post … most informative!
Get busy living or get busy dying 🌼
Cent present agree with you
This is a really helpful list, and yes, let’s not see speaking up as taboo 😊
I like this post. It definitely triggered me to want to read and comment. I am not by an means a trained professional, but I am a person who dives deep into all I am and do, and if it’s okay, I would like to add to the end—concentration through focused effort. Find something to focus on, and every day for 30 minutes, focus only on that, not allowing your body or mind to move, literally. Especially the eyes. The eyes deal with 70 to 80% of the world you see. Meaning you’re occipital lobes process all the time. Calm youre visual cortex and you calm your mind.
Wow. Loved what you said here. And thank you for adding to this post. You are absolutely correct. Claiming a mind comes from focus. 🌸

Well said. Life needs a purpose, people need to be needed. So to combat sadness, find a purpose, find out how you can fill a need. You differentiate, though, between sadness and depression: that’s also important. Sadness is an emotion we can work to address – or sometimes just ride it out. Depression is an overwhelming mood, can bring hopelessness, bring the sufferer to a standstill. It will probably need support from elsewhere, rather than from inside oneself, to deal with it. As you and others here point out, people should not be afraid to seek that help.
I enjoy your writing and advice.

Thank you. Together we can make great change
Absolutely my friend
I shall add, stop living a life of others’ expectations.
The phrase “Social Misfits” is coined by a society that measures happiness by success with accumulation of material wealth. The pressure to fit in is in many cases the root cause of depression.

What if you have a life goal but depression starts to refrain you from achieving it
Very valid question, Manahil. Depression is a slow killer and often saps away all zeal from life. While there is no one remedy, my only suggestion is give your everything to your goal, give no time for anything else. If depression is an illness don’t shy to seek for help. Hope this is helpful. If you need to discuss happy to help
Beautifull said. We always need a purpose to stay strong. Thanks, Shantanu.
Thanks so much my dear friend
My pleasure.🌹

Nice list Shantanu. I think you have compiled a very nice group of ideas. Another thing that really works to alleviate sadness on a deeper level is knowing God. There is a lot of peace that comes from knowing the lord and that the creator of the universe as great as he is, loves us. God wants us to be happy and he cares about how we feel. To Shantanu and anyone reading, God is real and he wants to connect with you. Say a word of prayer today and begin a relationship with him.
If you need further information on how to build a relationship with God, I have a post on it here: https://christcenteredruminations.wordpress.com/2018/08/29/how-to-build-a-relationship-with-god/
I will leave you with this bible verse:
Psalm 34: 17-18
The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
God bless you 🙂
